Review: The Hazards of Skinny Dipping - Alyssa Rose Ivy

The Hazards of Skinny DippingTitle: The Hazards of Skinny Dipping
Author: Alyssa Rose Ivy
Release Date: May 17th 2013
Genres: New Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Pages: 248
Source: Bought
This isn't a deep book about first loves or self-discovery. If you want a book like that, I'd be happy to recommend one, but I don't have that kind of story to tell. Instead my story is about rash decisions and finding out that your dream guy is bad in bed. It's the story of when I finally went skinny dipping, and how my life was never the same again. Oh, and it's also the story of my freshman year of college and realizing Mr. Right might have been there all along.

Let me start of by saying that I before starting this book, I didn't think I'd like it. Not really sure why, but I didn't have any high expectations for it. And this was also my first book by Alyssa Rose Ivy so I had really no idea if I was going to enjoy it or not. Fortunately, I was wrong and I ended up reading it the same day and I surprisingly quite enjoyed it.

At the start, I didn't really like Juliet. I thought she was quite stupid and just didn't really question anything. She just slept with this guy after they went skinny dipping and all that. I didn't like that she didn't really realise how much of a jerk and a stupid asshole Dylan was. I also didn't like that it took too much time for her to realise that (she did in the end, but I was getting way impatient). I didn't hate her, it just took some time to warm up to her and once she actually 'opened her eyes', you get to really see what kind of character she is. Oh, and I liekd that she wasn't a stereotypical character like what we see a lot in NA/YA, she wasn't a virgin nor a whore. So all in all - Juliet at the beginning (hate), Juliet at the end (like). :)

OMG. I want to punch Dylan and probably kick him in the balls too. He was just a massive dickhead and I HATED HIS GUTS. I know we weren't supposed to like him really but I JUST HATED HIM. I don't think I've ever had this reaction to a fictional character before. He was too possessive, jealous, you name it. I don't know what Juliet ever saw in him to be honest.

Now Reed, on the other hand, I absolutely loved! I rooted for him at the very beginning (and the end). He was so funny, smart, and doesn't treat girls like shit. He's so charming and the kind of guy you'd want to take home to your parents. He's just an overall sweet guy and I flipping adored him.

The plot was actually very interesting and quite different to other NA books in my opinion. There was a lot of stuff you can learn from this story and I liked the growth Juliet has throughout the book. She grows from this naive girl to a woman who knows what she finally wants. Oh, and I find it funny that the book started with a scene of skinny dipping and also ended with up. The question is, with who this time? :P

I know some people are really bored with mermaids, but for me personally I just want MORE of them. I've always loved mermaids (hey, Ariel is my fav Disney princess after all :P) and I hope this upcoming one from Harlequin Teen won't disappoint.

Cover Thoughts:
I do love the whole cover split thingy(?) or whatever you call it, that's what grabbed my attention from the very beginning. It does scream MERMAIDS and UNDERWATER so you immediately know which one you're dealing with. :) I do like it overall!

Cover Reveal and Excerpt: Darker Days - Jus Accardo

DARKER DAYS (Darker Agency #1)
Jus Accardo
Entangled (DigiTeen) - August 2013

Synopsis

Jessie Darker goes to high school during the day, but at night she helps with the family investigation business. Cheating husbands and stolen inheritances? They’re your girls—but their specialty is a bit darker. Zombie in your garage? Pesky Poltergeist living in your pool? They’ll have the problem solved in a magical minute. For a nominal fee, of course...

When gorgeous new client, Lukas Scott, saunters into the office requesting their help to find a stolen box, it sounds like a simple case—until the truth comes out. The box is full of Sin.

Seven deadly ones, in fact.

They’ve got five days to recapture the Sins before they're recalled by the box, taking seven hijacked human bodies with them. Easy peasy—except for one thing...

There’s a spell that will allow the Sins to remain free, causing chaos forever. When the key ingredient threatens the life of someone she knows, Jessie must make the ultimate choice between love and family—or lose everything.

Excerpt

“So not your biggest fan at the moment,” I said, closing the office door behind me. The runofffrom my jeans had soaked my sneakers pretty good. With each step, I gave a slight squishing noise accompanied by an annoying squeak against the old tile floor.

From across the room, Mom stared. “What happened to you?”

“It attacked me.” Tossing my bag on the couch, I sank into her chair and made sure to grind my butt into the cushion. Got it nice and wet. I was all about sharing the love—and right now, the love was soggy.

She laughed, waving a folder in my direction. “Surely you’re overreacting. It was one little zombie. They don’t attack people.”

“I’m serious, Ma. It tried to drown me. And the client assaulted me with ugly footwear. As far as punishments go, I’d say we’re probably square. I’ve learned my lesson.”

“You’re serious?” Amused expression now replaced by concern, she crossed the room and leaned over her desk to get a better look at me.

“As a coronary.” Once I was sure the chair had sponged up all it could, I stood and huffed past her. Pulling at my favorite T-shirt—the word Fate inside a blood red heart, is a four letter word on the back—I said, “Child welfare would not be happy to hear you tried to feed your only child to a walking corpse…”

“But why would it attack? Did you provoke it?” Folding her arms, she frowned. “Insult it, perhaps?”

I winked at her. “Provoke it? Sure. I went and wiggled my ass in front of it yelling lunch just to see what’d happen.” I’d called it Stinky, but that didn’t count as an insult. Something couldn’t be considered an insult if it was true, right?

Right eyebrow twitching, she fought against a smile. “But you’re okay, right? No bites, broken bones, head injuries, possessions…?”

I smiled and did a little twirl. “All in one piece and still me.”

Mom had a checklist she went through at the end of each job. I was known for taking almost as much damage as I inflicted.

“Oh, and you’re probably going to get a call from the client. I sorta smashed her fence in the process.”

Mom groaned. “I told you to be more careful.”

“It’s not like I tried to break anything.”

“Something tells me you didn’t try hard enough not to break anything, either.”

“In my defense, it wasn’t a simple trap and slap…”

“We can’t afford this.” She reached down and pulled a white envelope out from under a stack of papers. “This is the bill for that Mercedes you smashed.”

“Oh! So not my fault. How was I supposed to know that Spring Heel was gonna land on the car? If it makes you feel any better, I think he was aiming for my head…”

“If you keep this up, we won’t even be able to afford the rent.”

She was right, of course, and it made me feel horrible. “I’m sorry. I guess I’m a wrecking ball wrapped in blue jeans. Take my cut of this job and put it toward the repairs. Keep my paycheck for the next month, too.” A good start, but it didn’t feel like enough. Sure, it would cover the damages—I hoped—but I felt guilty about upsetting her. The bills that were piling up kept her awake at night. This was only going to make things worse. We got a fair amount of business, but the overhead in our line of work was sky high.

As much as I hated the idea, I knew what would cheer her up. “I’ll even throw in pet possessions for the next month.”

Review: The Beautiful and The Cursed - Page Morgan

The Beautiful and the CursedTitle: The Beautiful and The Cursed (The Dissposessed #1)
Author: Page Morgan
Release Date: May 14th 2013
Publisher:  Delacorte Books
Genres: YA, Paranormal, Romance, Historical
Pages: 352
Source: Bought
After a bizarre accident, Ingrid Waverly is forced to leave London with her mother and younger sister, Gabby, trading a world full of fancy dresses and society events for the unfamiliar city of Paris.

In Paris there are no grand balls or glittering parties, and, disturbingly, the house Ingrid’s twin brother, Grayson, found for them isn’t a house at all. It’s an abandoned abbey, its roof lined with stone gargoyles that could almost be mistaken for living, breathing creatures.

And Grayson has gone missing.

No one seems to know of his whereabouts but Luc, a devastatingly handsome servant at their new home.

Ingrid is sure her twin isn’t dead—she can feel it deep in her soul—but she knows he’s in grave danger. It will be up to her and Gabby to navigate the twisted path to Grayson, a path that will lead Ingrid on a discovery of dark secrets and otherworldly truths. And she’ll learn that once they are uncovered, they can never again be buried.

When I first found out about this book I was like: GARGOYLES! PARIS! 1890S! FANCY DRESSES! THE GORGEOUS COVER! Seriously, this book ticked all the boxes for me. It was like Page Morgan knew what kind of book I love and wrote it. Her debut, The Beautiful and The Cursed not only lived up to my expectations, but here I am moaning because the next book won't be out until next year! *sob*

It's official: GARGOYLES are my new favorite paranormal creature. I've never read a gargoyle book before so I never really know much about them (though I am interested). They actually ward off evil and protect their humans. I love the gargoyles in this!!! They are powerful, unique and just so kick-ass. The author's take was so creative and just amazing, certainly a lot of research has gone on to this. I honestly think gargoyles will be one of the next big things and with this and JLA's upcoming gargoyle series, I have no doubt about that. :)

Ingrid and Gabby are our two main female characters, and while Ingrid was more of the lead of the two sisters, it was Gabby who I adore. She was just hilarious and a total contradiction to her sister. Gabby's very outspoken and brave, while Ingrid's more of the thinking and quiet type. I did grew to like Ingrid too but it was Gabby who stood out. Then we have the two boys! Luc, while a little bit mysterious to me, was still very swoon-worthy and a complicate character. I loved his backstory. I most prefer Nolan though, he just have my heart. ;) So yes, I love Nolan and Gabby more.

The romance obviously wasn't the main part of this and we only get a few kisses but each time they touch or kiss, it was just sooooo perfect. What I also really loved about this was that for both couples, there was no insta-love. Actually, there was a lot of insta-hate. Which I found hilarious to read about! :) So yes, if you love romance and a healthy one at that, pick up this book.

While the first part of the book was a little bit slow, it definitely made up for it in the second half. And also, the reason maybe why it was slow was because of the world-building and the whole introduction to the characters and gargoyles. The second half was more of action and romance. I do have to say that the author's writing was just perfect. It was soooo vivid that I can actually imagine the whole thing and how she describes the 1890's Paris is just too cool. I want to go there!

The plot was so intricate and complex, there was so much going on, but not to the point where you get overwhelmed and stuff. It was just right. I love the whole idea about the Dispossessed and the Alliance and thought that it wasn't something we see in YA a lot. While the ending left me dying for Book 2 (The Lovely and The Lost), there was no stupid and annoying cliffhanger. It just made me want the book even more :)

All in all, THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED is seriously worth the read if you're a YA paranormal and gothic fan and if you want to try reading something new - Gargoyles! :)
Pssst. I hope in the sequel, we get more Nolan and Gabby time. ;)

WILD CARDS (Fullriders #1)
:- Simone Elkeles -:
Wild Cards (Wild Cards, #1)

OCTOBER 1st, 2013
from Walker Books

After getting kicked out of boarding school, bad boy Derek Fitzpatrick has no choice but to live with his ditzy stepmother while his military dad is deployed. Things quickly go from bad to worse when he finds out she plans to move them back to her childhood home in Illinois. Derek’s counting the days before he can be on his own, and the last thing he needs is to get involved with someone else’s family drama.

Ashtyn Parker knows one thing for certain--people you care about leave without a backward glance. A football scholarship would finally give her the chance to leave. So she pours everything into winning a state championship, until her boyfriend and star quarterback betrays them all by joining their rival team. Ashtyn needs a new game plan, but it requires trusting Derek—someone she barely knows, someone born to break the rules. Is she willing to put her heart on the line to try and win it all?

Simone Elkeles has always been one of my top author reads and her books (especially the Perfect Chemistry series) are some of my to-go to reads when I'm in a reading slump. I just can't frigging wait for this new series and I'm pretty sure it will be EPIC. It is by Simone Elkeles, after all. :)

Cover Thoughts:
Normally I don't like the couple on the cover thing but with this, I actually do love it. I love the colours, the font title and the way they have football on the cover - really shows what it's about, right?
So what do YOU think of my pick this week? And what are YOU waiting for this Wednesday? :)

Review: Sweet Peril - Wendy Higgins

Sweet Peril (The Sweet Trilogy, #2)Title: Sweet Peril (The Sweet Trilogy #2)
Author: Wendy Higgins
Release Date: April 30th 2013
Publisher:  HarperTeen
Genres: YA, Paranormal, Romance
Pages: 371
Source: Bought

Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

Isn't the cover just so bloody gorgeous?!? When I first saw it I was like WHOA and I sincerely hoped the instead was just as breathtaking. And you know what? It was everything I hoped for and more.

SWEET PERIL has got to be one of the most strongest sequels out there. Just when you think that it couldn't possibly top SWEET EVIL, it just continues to prove you wrong. I honestly don't really have anything negative to say about this sequel, I just LOVE LOVE LOVE it. The awesome characters, the swoonworthy Kai(!!!), the whole Neph thing, everything just came together for me and this Sweet series is now right there at the top with my favourite paranormal YA series.

Now, let's talk about my future husband, Kaidan. *fans self* This guy couldn't get hotter. Yes, he was an absolute dick in the first half (so heartbreaking by the way), but he was only doing all those things to protect Anna. Normally, I would have rolled my eyes at that, but not with Kai. Everything he has ever done was with a valid reason, and we might not like it, but we get why. We don't really get to see him that much in the first half, but OH BOY THE SECOND HALF KILLED ME WITH THE SCENES OF KAI. He soooo redeemed himself at the end, and I here I thought I couldn't love him more.

While I was indifferent to Anna in SWEET EVIL, she totally won me over in SWEET PERIL. Yes, she's still the smart, good girl, but she has changed a lot. She's now stronger, more capable of taking care of herself, but overall she's just a normal girl with a very big big big heart. She also didn't annoy me as much (I got so annoyed with her crying in the first book) and I couldn't help rooting for her and Kai.

Before starting this, I was dreading the thought of the love triangle. Now THIS, THIS IS A LOVE TRIANGLE DONE RIGHT. That is, if you want to call it a love triangle. To me personally, it wasn't a love triangle. Anna knew right from the very beginning who her heart belongs to and doesn't try to lead the other guy. HURRAY! I do love Kope (such a sweetie) but come on, no one can beat Kai. ;)

The Nephilim aspect is one that you wouldn't normally see in the other YA angels/demons stories out there. To me, this series is totally unique and one (if not, the) best out there. I just adore the whole idea of it, and I'm dying for SWEET RECKONING to come out! The ending of this book is just perfect.

This just has the perfect blend of action and romance and just ahhhh everything. I love the whole journey Wendy took us in SWEET PERIL, and how she got us all invested in her characters. I would love to see more of Blake in the next book, please! :)

The Summer I Became a Nerd

Author: Leah Rae Miller
Release Date: May 7th 2013
Publisher:  Entangled Teen
Genres: YA, Contemp
Pages: 276

On the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader—perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl's body isn’t just unknown, it's anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.

Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play, but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shop’s counter uncovers her secret, she’s busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom, Maddie’s whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions, live-action role-playing, and first-person-shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is, the deeper her lies become…and the more she risks losing Logan forever.

:- GUEST POST BY AUTHOR Leah Rae Miller -:

What sort of research did you have to do for The Summer I Became a Nerd?

Ah, research. Sometimes it can be fun, sometimes it can be boring, and sometimes it can get you put on FBI watch lists. For The Summer I Became a Nerd, research was a breeze. Mainly because I already have extensive knowledge of nerdy things. Sure there were times when I needed to Google some comic book characters’ real names or an artist’s name, but for the most part I already knew it all.

My brother was an invaluable resource, too.
Actual conversation: Me: “Who is Wolverine’s arch nemesis, would you say?”
Him: “Sabertooth.”
Me: “Real name?”
Him: “Victor Creed.”
Me: “That won’t work. Give me someone else.”
And on and on it would go until we would get completely off topic and start geeking out about the up-coming summer blockbusters.

LARP is something I’m pretty familiar with, too. I’ve done my fair share of it. Particularly Vampire: The Masquerade. Some of the most fun times I’ve ever had was getting all dolled up to go play Vampire with a big group of friends. I almost went to a couple of games that were still going on here in town, but just never got around to it. I joined one of the Facebook pages for it and every once in a while there would be a lively conversation about characters or powers that would spark some inspiration.

Setting was also a no-brainer since I’ve lived practically my entire life in Natchitoches. It’s a vibrant and beautiful place, perfect for a light, fluffy romantic comedy.

So, all in all, research was super easy for me which is one of the many reasons I knew I had to write this book.

I leave you with this question readers, who is your favorite comic book character?

Review: Obsession - Jennifer L. Armentrout!

ObsessionTitle: Obsession (An Arum Novel #1)
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: May 31st 2013
Publisher:  Entangled (Covet)
Genres: Adult, Paranormal/Sci-Fi, Romance
Pages: Unknown
Source: For review/won from Entangled

He’s arrogant, domineering, and... To. Die. For.

Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.

Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something... unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.

Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life…or is it Hunter?

SO. That was basically my first thought at finishing OBSESSION. A bit awkward but so true.

Anywayyyyy, I know my review would never do this book justice but hey at least I tried, right? In case you're wondering, yes, the Queen of Everything Jennifer L. Armentrout has done it again. OBSESSION was everything I hoped for and more. I was dying for this book ever since she gave us some teasers last May and NOW I actually can't believe I've finally read it!

Hunter is definitely the baddest hot male character Jen has ever written. EVER. He's also my favourite which says a LOT. Sorry Daemon and Cam but Hunter is definitely kicking both your asses. Hunter is not your typical hero. First, I doubt you'd even like him at the beginning. He's an ARUM - besides being one of the 'bad guys', he's also cold, an alpha male, has an ego the size of the planet and with such arrogance that will put Daemon to shame. But as you read on, you just can't help but really fall in love with him. I KNOW I DID. Like Serena says "You're more than a weapon, Hunter. So much more." There is so much more to him and by the end of the book, I'm oh so ready to marry and have his babies. YUM.

If you love how feisty Alex and Katy are, then you'd adore Serena!! Serena made me laugh as much as Hunter did, and I love how big her heart is and how feisty she is with Hunter. She NEVER backs down from him and I just love their interactions. If you love Daemon and Kat's banter, you'd LOVE Hunter and Serena's. Made me laugh so much!

You know what's so great about all this? Besides the sexy romance (which is my fav), there was this whole thing between the Luxen, Arum, the government and even humans. Those who've read the Lux series will obviously know more, but you can also read this as a stand-alone (she explains everything perfectly). And I really admire how Jen wrote this whole alien war thing being not just black and white. There's soooo many gray areas, and to be honest, there's NO good guy or bad guy. In the YA series, we get the Luxen point of view and we all deemed the Arum as the stupid ugly bad guys. But it's so far from that. I'm so thankful to JLA for writing this from the supposed enemy point of view. Arum can be just as interesting and good as the Luxen. I'm so not Team anybody. I love both the Luxens and Arums. :)

If you thought that JLA couldn't write her books any more hotter, well then you're SO wrong. Hands down, OBSESSION is her hottest and sexiest book so far. I read a lot of adult/new adult smexy stuff, but some of the stuff here made me blush. The scenes are so beautifully written and not just there for the sake of it. (Definitely not for the younger readers but I am nearly an adult so :P)

You're all probably so tired of me going on and on about Jen's fabulous writing, but I gotta say it again. She's one hell of a writer. Guys, she's one of the actual few who makes me WANT to lose sleep just because I HAVE to know what happens next. I started this in the late evening and didn't finish until the morning. (Which probably wasn't a good idea since I had a test in the morning but OH SO WORTH IT GUYS.) OBSESSION has a mix of everything you want: characters you can never get enough of, smexy romance with a touch of action and humour and basically just everything else ahhhhhh. GOSH IS IT SO OBVIOUS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS BOOK?

There's just so much I want to say about OBSESSION but I really can't so..*zips lips* But yes, some characters from the Lux YA series does make some appearances ;) And now I also kinda know why the fourth Lux book is called ORIGIN. *grin*  This is so going on my favourites list and no doubt this will come up when I do my yearly Top 10 lists. My only wish is it: Can I have this on paperback please?? I NEED THIS ON MY SHELF.

And...because I'm such a nice person, I'll end this review with one of my fav quotes from OBSESSION:

""You're more than a weapon, Hunter. So much more."

"With you? I am more, but not with anyone else. "

OBSESSION just made me even more excited for ORIGIN!

So many hugs and thanks to the lovely people at Entangled - Liz Pelletier and Heather Riccio!! :D
And of course to my fav author ever Jennifer L. Armentrout for being so awesome to her fans and for writing the best stories ever.
