ABOUT THE BOOK:
Hooked
Get hooked on a girl named Fred...

HE said: Fred Oday is a girl? Why is a girl taking my best friends spot on the boy's varsity golf team?

SHE said: Can I seriously do this? Can I join the boys' team? Everyone will hate me - especially Ryan Berenger.

HE said: Coach expects me to partner with Fred on the green? That is crazy bad. Fred's got to go - especially now that I can't get her out of my head. So not happening.

SHE said: Ryan can be nice, when he's not being a jerk. Like the time he carried my golf bag. But the girl from the rez and the spoiled rich boy from the suburbs? So not happening.

But there's no denying that things are happening as the girl with the killer swing takes on the boy with the killer smile...

AUTHOR INTERVIEW with LIZ FICHERA!

1. When did you know you wanted to be a writer, and when did you actually start writing?

When I was 10 years old, I told my parents I wanted to become a writer after I wrote my first story about my favorite collie dog, Lady.  Then life, responsibilities and a whole bunch of things happened, and I didn’t actually begin writing full-time until seven years ago.

2. Do you usually begin a book with a character or a plot?

I usually begin with an idea.  Then the plot and characters follow.  So, for example, I might read a quote or hear a song or meet someone that inspires me to write a story.  My stories almost always start with a seed of an idea and then build from there.  I’m a total pantser.

3.What is the hardest thing about writing HOOKED?

HOOKED was one of those stories that sort of had a mind of its own.  Once I started writing it, the words just kinda flowed.  I was driving along Pecos Road, just outside the Gila River Indian Reservation near my home, when I got this idea to write about a Native American teenaged girl golfer.  Soon after that, I began to see Fred in my head.

4. How would you describe Fred and Ryan's relationship in five words?

Forbidden.  Intense.  Sweet. Deep. Goosebumps.

5. Did Fred and Ryan's relationship came to you easily? Like you knew exactly what kind of a couple they were before writing HOOKED?

Once I understood Fred and Ryan—what made them tick—the relationship began to click in place.   It didn’t happen right away for me.  Like their love, it evolved as I wrote their story.

6. Are any of the characters in HOOKED inspired by someone in your life?

Fred’s father has characteristics that are very similar to my own father.

7. How do you make up names for your characters? Is there any meaning or significance to their names?

Names are important for me so I think about a character’s name for a long time before I decide whether it feels right.  A person should live up to his/her name, right?

8. Who would play your hero and heroine in the tv or film version of your book?

Oh, that is a nice dream.   The models for the book cover, coincidentally, were almost 100% exactly like the faces I had in my head for Fred and Ryan as I wrote their story.  So, I would hire them to play Fred and Ryan! Again, a girl can dream.

9.I love the cover for HOOKED! Did you have any input on the cover? Did you imagined/expected it to look different? If you had your way, what would the cover be?

Me, too! Thank you.  The cover exceeded my expectations because, as I said, the models they chose for the cover were positively spot-on.  HarlequinTEEN does some amazingly gorgeous covers and, as an author, you’re shown headshots of the models and then various poses.  For HOOKED, we narrowed it down to 3 and the pose that was chosen was simply perfect, in my humble opinion.  I think HOOKED is unique in that the main character is Native American.  There are too few mainstream YAs with Native American girls (or boys) as main characters or, with settings in the American Southwest for that matter.

10. Thank you so much again! I'm dying to read HOOKED :)

Thank you so much, Jana! *hugs*
